Since ancient times, Japan has had traditional patterns of plants, animals, natural phenomena, and geometric shapes based on Japanese sensitivity. This book introduces 214 different patterns and includes photographs of each pattern used in historical fine arts and kimonos. You will be surprised for diverse patterns.
On the first floor of Shiba Park Hotel, there are also carpets with traditional pattern design. You will see “Shippo-mon” (overlapped circles) in the reception and modern designed of “Watunagi-mon” (connected circles) in front of restaurant “The Dining” in the entrance lobby. Do you know what KINTSUGI is?
It is one of Japanese traditional restoration technique for broken ceramics. KINTSUGI is used a special liquid called URUSHI to glue the pieces together and is decorated with metal powder such as gold. In recent years, KINTSIGI has become well known and popular as we spend more time at home after COVID-19 in Japan and from the point of the SDGs.
It is not only about repairing broken ceramics (or restoration), but also about finding new beauty in broken pieces by calling the scars of the joints “scenery.” I think this can be called the Japanese sense of beauty. If you are at all interested in KINTSUGI, please try reading this book, which has a lot of photographs and illustrations and explains the KINTSUGI process in detail. The book character explains important points at each step of the process, making the content very easy to understand. KINTSUGI is very enjoyable culture and you might get into it!

This book contains a collection of photographs of a variety of designed Lucky Cats.
Lucky Cat is called “Maneki-neko” in Japanese. They stand on their two hind feet, and make an inviting gesture with one of their forefeet. It is said that a cat raising its right forefoot attracts happiness and money, while one raising its left forefoot attracts good people and guests. Generally, a Maneki-neko is colored with white, black and red, but we also have cats in different colors. Depending on its color, each Maneki-neko has its own meaning and fortune.
If this book has piqued your interest in Maneki-neko, why not take it as a souvenir?
