A picture book title is feebly illustrated with the drawing of twigs and leaves. An illustration of an elephant is created with a delicate touch. The elephant’s eyes, very beautiful but sad, are impressive. These will make my heart ache before I open the picture book. The picture book begins with a sentence: “There once was an animal called Elephant.” Since the elephants are introduced from the beginning as creatures of the past, we can understand that this is somehow a message to us. As he is one last elephant in the depths of despair, both a ship he has boarded and his tusks are beyond his control. And he ends up in a state of resignation. The apple traveling with him seems to be there for him, but can also seem like a poison apple.
The picture book is only 29 pages, but it is a deeply meaningful picture book that raises a red flag for the future of the Earth’s largest animal – the elephant. I recommend that you read this picture book again after reading the introduction page of the Japan Tiger and Elephant Fund.

I wish I could try Amelie’s creme brûlée at Cafe des Deux Moulins in Paris someday.
