In the tale of artisans Vol.6 with the theme of “Mebuki”, we introduce two heartwarming crafts, “Satsuma ware” with painted pretty flowers and birds, and “Hand-inspired stencil dyeing,” a beautiful dyeing technique that looks like a flower garden. Please enjoy yourself as long as time premits.

What is Satsuma ware?

Satsuma ware can be roughly classified into “white Satsuma” and “black Satsuma” based on differences in characteristics. Black type of Satsuma ware, which is both simple and sturdy, has been loved by the common people as daily necessities, while white type of Satsuma ware was fired in the caln kilns of Tateno-style and Naeshirogawa-style, and was the exclusive pottery of the clan and Shimizu family. The transparent, shiny pale yellow color, fine cracks covering the surface and the gold coloring , as well as the delicate and sophisticated techniques, such as carving elegant patterns with a small knife, are also striking features.

What is Hand-inserted stencil dyeing？

Stencil dyeing is considered a representative dyeing technique of the Edo period and there are various techniques. For example, the traditional craft of “Edo Komon” is dyed using a single piece of pattern paper called Ise-katagami, which is carved out of several dozen centimeters of Ise washi paper. In Hand-inserted stencil dyeing stencil dyeing, the fabric is dipped in dye-proof paste using this Ise-katagami and then dyed by applying colors with a small brush. It is almost the same technique as Ryukyu Bingata, a generic name for Okinawan dyeing, but it is characterized by stylish colors and patterns that capture the taste of the Edo period.

Shiba district in Tokyo is a place where you can still feel the wind of Edo-era. Shiba Park Hotel is a good old hotel that has weaved its way through time in harmony with the traditions and culture of this area. Shiba Park Hotel is also a library hotel with a diverse collection of books. We hold an exhibition called “Tale of Artisans” which tell stories of traditions (tales) that they have developed and nurtured.
