What is SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015. This is the goal set by 193 United Nations Member States to achieve in the 15 years from 2016 to 2030. Composed of 17 goals and 169 targets for a sustainable world, we pledge “Leave No One Behind.”

Creation of venues for traditional culture

Shiba Park Hotel aims to be a company that is needed by society, and by "connecting people, town, and history," we will create common value and play a role in supporting and contributing to the cultural heritage. The exhibition called “Tale of Artisans” is held with a seasonal theme of traditions (stories) spun by Japanese artisans, and is centered on books and Japanese culture. The exhibition features traditional crafts and culture nurtured from the bounty of nature, as well as the characteristics and charms of traditional events in various regions of Japan that have been carefully passed down from generation to generation. Our goal is to create a sustainable experience where history and culture are passed down through the ages, leading to a better and richer tomorrow.

Participating in the “Book Baton Project” to Deliver Education Through Books

Every year from Christmas to New Year’s Day, Shiba Park Hotel has created and displayed a Book Tree with books donated by our guests and employees, and donated the proceeds from the sales of those books through the “Book Baton Project” run by Room to Read Japan, a certified non-profit organization. The donations are given to improve literacy rates among children living in historically low-income areas of Asian and African countries.

Donation Plans

Shiba Park Hotel has prepared an accommodation plan that allows guests to contribute to society by staying at the hotel while enjoying books. For a part of the room charge (200JPY,) two children books written in local languages will be donated in cooperation with Room to Read Japan.

Room to Read envisions a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality, where all children have room to read, learn and grow.

In-House Awards (Good Job, Continuous Service)

As part of efforts to enhance job satisfaction, Shiba Park Hotel has implemented an internal award system called the “Good Job Awards.” Through this initiative, employees can nominate each other for outstanding work that left a strong impression as a “Good Job.” Each year, approximately 120 to 180 cases are nominated, and twice a year, an awards ceremony is held to recognize selected individuals. The initiative was launched with the goal of fostering a culture of praise and has since developed into an element that fosters a sense of purpose and ownership in one’s work. It serves as an important tool to encourage employees to work with pride and fulfillment, helping to achieve the company’s mission and behavioral guidelines. We also recognize employees who have worked with us for 10, 20, and 30 years through our Continuous Service Awards.

Cooking Contest Awards

Shiba Park Hotel holds a cooking contest aimed at fostering internal communication and boosting motivation. The contest primarily features new employees, with teams composed of employees from various departments, emphasizing not only cooking skills but also cross-department collaboration. The competition evaluates not only the quality of the dishes but also the pairing with beverages, with the harmony between food and beverages being an important aspect of the scoring. We value excellent teamwork and creative ideas that arise from employees with diverse skills working together.

Training Programs / Cultural & Art Workshops

Shiba Park Hotel provides a variety of training programs, including monthly internal training sessions for the next-generation leaders, opportunities to attend external training programs that enhance personal skills and career development, and in-house workshops on traditional Japanese crafts and culture. We also conduct company-wide “Compliance and Harassment” program, essential for creating a comfortable and supportive workplace environment. Additionally, we emphasize nurturing proactive individuals by introducing a new “Career Design” program in 2023. We also launched a “Learning Assistance” program, which supports employees in obtaining qualifications, certifications, and attending courses, even those unrelated to their daily work duties. These experiences not only enhance awareness and motivation but also aim to improve the overall quality of our employees, both as hotel employees and as professionals in society.

Club Activities

Shiba Park Hotel has a wide range of club activities that allow our employees to broaden the scope of their skills and hobbies. Through club activities such as sports and culture, we support them in eliminating their lack of daily exercise and encouraging them to refresh their minds. By stimulating interaction among the employees, we will create an open and better corporate culture.

Hiring Foreign Employees / Japanese Language Training

In recent years, Shiba Park Hotel has hired foreign employees to support the increasing number of inbound visitors and to provide our guests a sense of security when they visit Japan. We are working to create an environment where every employee can pay an active role, regardless of nationality, age, or gender, and where we can advance our careers according to our abilities. Reduced Hours System / Maternity and Childcare Leave System

Shiba Park Hotel tries to promote an environment where all employees can work comfortably and support a balance between work and childcare. The introduction of this system also leads to the development of a diverse workforce.

Internship

In recent years, when it is said that there are not many people who want to work in the service industry, Shiba Park Hotel is actively working to provide useful hands-on experience for college and university students to help them find future employment or enter the workforce. We also offer several days of hands-on experience for students from high schools, junior high schools for the disabled.

Transitioning to an Automated Solution

In order improve the efficiency and productivity of operations, check-in tablet device and a 24-hour foreign currency exchange machine were installed. These initiatives have reduced the amount of time guests have to wait, relieved labor shortages, and reduced overtime work. Increasing the time to serve guests in person creates job satisfaction.

Environmentally Friendly with Plant-Based Ingredients

All guest rooms are equipped with Millennium Organics Blue Label amenities, which contain more than 90% plant- and mineral-derived ingredients. The products are fragranced with natural essential oils without synthetic fragrances, are ethylene-free, and are made from carefully selected raw materials according to organic standards. The ingredients are formulated to have a low environmental impact as a whole.

Use of Sustainable Amenities -A Step Towards ZERO Plastic with Bamboo and Wood

As part of Shiba Park Hotel’s sustainable initiatives, we offer amenities primarily from bamboo. Items such as trays and tissue covers in guest rooms have also been replaced with eco-friendly materials like bamboo and wood. Notably, our organic bamboo toothbrushes contribute to reducing plastic waste. This toothbrush is made using patented technology and contains no chemical agents, ensuring it is safe and environmentally friendly. Bamboo is a sustainable materials that grows in just 3 to 4 years, making it an ideal alternative to plastic. Additionally, our toothpaste comes in paper packaging, supporting an eco-friendly lifestyle that begins with oral care. By using natural bamboo toothbrushes, we provide a unique accommodation experience that balances health and environmental conservation.

Adoption of Eco-Friendly High Quality Tea (Art of Tea) in Guest Rooms

Art of Tea prioritizes natural aromas while minimizing the use of fragrances, and over 95% of its ingredients are certified organic by the USDA. Environmental considerations are also key, with eco-pyramid sachets made from biodegradable materials used for tea bags. This ensures that they naturally decompose after use, minimizing environmental impact. Notably, the Organic Mint Green Tea is Fair Trade certified, ensuring fair trading practices for producers. By offering environmentally friendly high quality tea in guest rooms, Art of Tea creates special moment from a sustainable perspective.

Rainforest Alliance Certified Products (coffee beans)

All coffee served in Shiba Park Hotel’s restaurant and banquet halls are Rainforest Alliance certified products. By actively handling coffee beans certified by the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable living, we are helping to protect the global environment and support producers in developing and other countries.

Use of Recyclable Coffee Capsules for In-house Guest Coffee

The coffee served at Shiba Park Hotel’s reception is made in support of Nespresso’s efforts to contribute to the global environment and society. The used capsules are collected after use and returned to Nespresso, where they are separated into aluminum and coffee grounds, which are turned into recycled aluminum and soil, respectively. More than 90% of Nespresso coffee comes from AAA certified farms and more than 40% from Rainforest Alliance certified farms.

Eco-friendly Cleaning Service

Shiba Park Hotel asks our guests staying for consecutive nights to help us contribute to the environment by minimizing the use of organic detergents and other cleaning products generated during the cleaning process. Eco-friendly cleaning service does not include room cleaning (vacuuming, bed making and sheet changing, bathroom cleaning) for stays of up to 2 nights, and we do not enter guests’ rooms. However, changing towels, replenishing amenities, and collecting trash are available 24 hours a day upon request. For hygienic reasons, we clean the rooms every 2 days during stays of 3 nights and more. By reusing bed linen and amenities instead of replacing them, we are committed to environmental conservation by reducing CO2 emissions, water resources, electricity, and waste.

Food loss and waste initiatives (Banquet halls)

Shiba Park Hotel recommends the “3010 Movement” and “mottECO” to our guests. Guests who support the "3010 Movement" will enjoy the food for 30 minutes after the toast, and then move on to a chatting time. In addition, 10 minutes before the end of the party, they can enjoy the meal again. If they still cannot finish their meal, they will be given a "mottECO box" in which is available take home the dishes at their own risk. This is a great way to enjoy the hotel's signature dishes in your entirety.

Sustainable Bookmarks with Environmental and Social Awareness

For Shiba Park Hotel’s original bookmarks, we have adopted the Fair Trade-certified banana paper, One Planet Paper ®. This ethical paper is a collaboration between Japan’s traditional Echizen Washi craftmanship and organic banana farmers in Mfuwe village, Zambia. It is uniquely linked to all 17 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The production of this banana paper involves local Zambian women who handcraft the material, creating job opportunities and supporting community empowerment. Moreover, as part of a climate-positive initiative, the process absorbs and sequesters more CO2 than it emits, contributing to a sustainable environment. About One Planet Paper ®: One Planet Paper ® began in 2011 with a vision to address two major challenges; environmental issues, such as deforestation and wildlife loss, and social issues, including poverty in developing countries and women’s empowerment. This is the first Fair Trade-certified paper in Japan and is directly tied to all 17 SDGs. It is produced in collaboration with organic banana farmers and local communities in Mfuwe village, near South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. The production process achieves climate positivity by absorbing and fixing more CO2 than it generates, making it a Fair Trade product that supports people, forests, and wildlife while protecting the environment.

Adopting Upcycle Design

Shiba Park Hotel introduces upcycled design for items such as hotel key cases and paper bags that were previously disposable. The key cases are designed to serve as reusable bookmarks after guest’s stay, while the hotel’s original paper bags can be repurposed as book covers. These designs encourage guests to engage in ethical actions while enjoying upcycled products as memorable keepsakes from their stay. Additionally, they serve as a promotional tool for the hotel, creating lasting impressions. Introduction of Environmentally Friendly Reconditioned Models to Reduce CO₂ Emissions and Waste in February 2024

ApeosPort-Ⅵ C RC Series / ApeosPro C650 Shiba Park Hotel has implemented environmentally friendly reconditioned models for the multifunction printers used within our company. This initiative achieves CO₂ reduction throughout the entire product life cycle and enhances employee awareness of environmental issues and commitment to the SDGs. About Environmentally Friendly Reconditioned Model: It is a machine that guarantees the quality of new products by disassembling, cleaning, and replacing parts of used products or regenerating parts from used products as needed and reassembling them.

Countermeasures Against Global Warming -Transitioning to Eco-Friendly Alternatives

・Elimination of the use of plastic straws　In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, one of the problems of global warming, the use of plastic straws has been eliminated and sugarcane straws have been introduced in our restaurant. About sugarcane straws: Sugarcane straws are made from bagasse (food residue byproduct from the sugarcane refining process) that used to be disposed of as an industrial waste material and PLA (polylactic acid), making them an upcycled product that is biodegradable with 100% natural ingredients. ・Wooden guest room key cards　To reduce the use of plastic materials, we introduce wooden key cards for our guests. ・Laundry bags　LIMEX is a new material based on limestone. Its use as a bag reduces the amount of plastic used.

・Zero use of plastic bottles for mineral water in the guest rooms　By using the purified water server, the use of plastic bottles for water in guest rooms will be reduced to zero. The water source is drinking water from Tokyo, which is known as one of the safest and best quality water sources in the world. The water is delivered through a water purifier before use. Continuous use of controlled drinking water also helps conserve resources. Our in-house guests are welcome to use water for drinking from our water server at any time and as much as they like. It is available 24 hours a day in the elevator halls on each guest room floor. *In 2013, the Advanced water purification plants were completed in all targeted areas of Tokyo. *Tap water has “51 water quality standards” established by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. We use water stand with high-performance purified water server, and it is reliable 3-stage filter system / Nano Trap Filter. In order to produce safe and good taste water from familiar tap water, the water is slowly and carefully filtered as if the earth were producing natural water. About Nano Trap Filter: This filter adsorbs impurities with the force of static electricity, and is made of nano alumina fibers for which NASA holds a technology patent, and for which an American materials company (Ahlstrom) holds the rights for mass production. ・Mineral water in banquet halls provided in paper carton products Shiba Park Hotel has discontinued the use of plastic bottles for mineral water containers for banquet halls, and have introduced paper products. Accommodate Food Allergies and Restrictions

Shiba Park Hotel serves guests from all over the world and has a large number of international employees. Some of our guests and employees have food allergies and restrictions due to their religious beliefs or health needs, so we offer multiple menu configurations to accommodate them flexibly.

Provision of Well-Being with Cage-Free Domestic Eggs (Animal Welfare)

All shell eggs used in Shiba Park Hotel’s restaurant and banquet halls are domestically sourced free-range eggs. These eggs come from chickens raised in environments where they can move freely, resulting in fresh and safe eggs from healthy, low-stress birds.

Non-smoking guest rooms

To prevent second-hand smoking and protect health, all guest rooms in Shiba Park Hotel are non-smoking.

Fire Drills and Evacuation Drills

To strengthen and maintain sustainability in case of disasters and accidents, Shiba Park Hotel supports monthly disaster drills, an annual firefighting examination, and training and certification of fire prevention managers, self-defense firefighting skills test, and disaster prevention center personnel.
